Algaealong is a term that describes the symbiotic relationship between certain types of algae and various animal species. This association allows both organisms to benefit from each other's presence. Typically, the algae reside within the tissues of the animal, often in specialized cells or spaces.

The most well-known examples of algaealong are found in marine environments. Corals, for instance, host photosynthetic dinoflagellates called zooxanthellae within their cells. These algae provide the coral with essential nutrients produced through photosynthesis, contributing significantly to the coral's energy supply and vibrant colors. In return, the coral offers the algae a protected environment and access to sunlight.

Other marine animals that exhibit algaealong include sea anemones, jellyfish, and some species of sponges and clams. Terrestrial examples are less common but do exist, such as certain fungi that incorporate cyanobacteria or green algae, forming lichens.

The specific mechanisms of nutrient exchange and the degree of dependency vary widely among different algaealong partnerships. In some cases, the host animal can survive without the algae, though it may be less healthy or vibrant. In other instances, the partnership is obligate, meaning neither organism can survive independently.
