Activation of alfa2adrenoceptors typically leads to an inhibitory effect. In the nervous system, presynaptic alfa2adrenoceptors act as autoreceptors, reducing the release of norepinephrine. This negative feedback mechanism helps to regulate sympathetic outflow and blood pressure. Antagonists of alfa2adrenoceptors, like yohimbine, have been explored for their potential in treating erectile dysfunction and depression, though their clinical use is more limited.
