alese

Alese is a term used primarily in bedding and textile contexts. In English, it is usually spelled alese (often without the accent) and is related to the French word alèse. In its core sense, an alese is a protective layer placed on the mattress, intended to guard the mattress from moisture, stains, and wear. It is typically positioned between the mattress and the bottom sheet and may function as a washable barrier that simplifies cleaning and extends mattress life. Alèses can be waterproof or moisture-wicking, and are manufactured in materials such as cotton, cotton blends, polyester, or vinyl. They are commonly elasticized around the edges to fit standard mattresses, and come in various thicknesses and degrees of protection. In hotels and hospitality settings, an alèse is part of standard bed protection and hygiene protocols.

The term is largely specialized to bedding and is not a general synonym for a fitted sheet
