Alesaggio, plurale alesaggi, is the Italian term for the bore, or the interior diameter of a cylinder, used in mechanical engineering to describe both the dimension and the operation of enlarging a cylindrical hole to a precise diameter. The term applies to holes in engines, hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, and other machine components where a precise cylindrical bore is required.

In practice, alesaggio denotes the machining steps: an initial hole is enlarged through boring to the target diameter, followed by honing to improve roundness and surface finish. In wear-resisting applications, the bore may be lined with a sleeve that is bored to the final diameter. Oversizing the bore is a common approach when reconditioning worn cylinders or when accommodating larger pistons in a rebuilt engine.

The bore size directly influences displacement; for a single cylinder, displacement equals pi times (bore/2) squared times stroke, summed over all cylinders. Bore tolerances are controlled through engineering standards; the bore is specified with a tolerance class (such as ISO fits) and measured with tools like bore gauges, micrometers, and dial indicators to ensure concentricity and dimensional accuracy.
