Aldosterone, a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands, plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure and electrolyte balance within the body. It is primarily involved in the reabsorption of sodium and the excretion of potassium in the kidneys, which in turn influences blood volume and blood pressure. Aldosterone acts on the mineralocorticoid receptors in the distal tubules and collecting ducts of the nephron.

The secretion of aldosterone is tightly controlled by the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). When blood pressure drops, the kidneys release renin, initiating a cascade that leads to the production of angiotensin II. Angiotensin II then stimulates the adrenal cortex to release aldosterone. Conversely, increased blood pressure and high levels of potassium can suppress aldosterone secretion.

While essential for maintaining homeostasis, dysregulation of aldosterone can lead to various health conditions. Conditions like hyperaldosteronism, where there is an overproduction of aldosterone, can cause hypertension, hypokalemia (low potassium levels), and metabolic alkalosis. Conversely, hypoaldosteronism, characterized by insufficient aldosterone production, can result in hyponatremia (low sodium levels), hyperkalemia, and hypotension. Medical conditions such as Addison's disease and certain kidney diseases can impact aldosterone levels. Treatment for aldosterone-related disorders often involves medications to regulate hormone levels or address the underlying cause.
