Aldehydesgloves are a class of protective gloves engineered to mitigate exposure to aldehyde compounds by incorporating scavenging or catalytic functionalities into the glove material. They are designed to reduce permeation of volatile aldehydes such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde during handling of aldehyde-containing reagents and finished products.

Construction typically combines a standard glove polymer (such as nitrile or latex) with a thin outer coating or embedded phase that contains aldehyde-scavenging agents or catalytic nanoparticles. Common features include a moisture-stable barrier, good tactile sensitivity, and optional indicators that show the extent of aldehyde breakthrough.

Mechanism: The outer layer reacts with aldehyde molecules to form non-volatile adducts or to catalytically convert aldehydes to less reactive products, thereby reducing permeation. The protective capacity is finite and dependent on exposure level, temperature, humidity, and duration of contact. Performance is measured in breakthrough time and capacity.

Applications: Use in chemical laboratories, diagnostic settings, woodworking, and cosmetics manufacturing where aldehyde exposure is a concern. They complement but do not replace conventional PPE and engineering controls such as ventilation.

Limitations and safety: Spent aldehydesgloves may require special disposal due to bound aldehydes; glove replacement frequency depends on exposure and the scavenging capacity; potential skin sensitivity to glove materials or scavengers exists. Regulatory acceptance varies across jurisdictions.

Status: The concept is discussed in PPE research as a potential enhancement to chemical safety gear. At present, widespread standardization and certification are limited, with ongoing evaluation of performance, safety, and environmental impact.
