Alcyon refers to a genus of octocorals, commonly known as soft corals. These marine invertebrates belong to the family Alcyoniidae, which is part of the order Alcyonacea. Alcyon corals are found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, often inhabiting coral reefs and rocky substrates. They are characterized by their soft, fleshy bodies, which can vary in shape and color.

Unlike hard corals, Alcyon corals do not secrete a massive external skeleton of calcium carbonate. Instead, they possess small, microscopic skeletal elements called sclerites, which are embedded within their tissues, providing support. These sclerites can vary in shape and are often used for taxonomic identification of different species. Alcyon corals are colonial organisms, with individual polyps connected by a fleshy, branching structure called a coenenchyme.

The polyps of Alcyon corals are typically small and possess eight feathery tentacles, which they use to capture plankton and other small food particles from the water column. They are suspension feeders, relying on water currents to bring them food. Many Alcyon species are also capable of photosynthesis, harboring symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae within their tissues. These algae provide the coral with nutrients produced during photosynthesis, while the coral offers the algae a protected environment.

Alcyon corals play an important role in reef ecosystems, providing habitat and food for various marine organisms. They are also a source of compounds with potential pharmaceutical applications, as some species produce unique bioactive molecules. However, like many coral species, Alcyon corals are vulnerable to threats such as climate change, ocean acidification, and pollution, which can lead to coral bleaching and degradation of their habitats.
