Alakítók are linguistic elements or processes that create or modify the form of a word. They attach to a base form or alter its shape in order to signal grammatical features, derive new words, or adjust pronunciation and spelling. In morphology, alakítók are distinguished from the word’s core meaning, focusing instead on form and grammatical function.

Alakítók can be broadly categorized as derivational and inflectional. Derivational alakítók form new words and may shift a word’s meaning or part of speech, while inflectional alakítók indicate grammatical categories such as number, case, tense, mood, or person without typically changing the lexical category. They commonly occur as affixes—prefixes, suffixes, infixes—and may also include other form-shaping processes like reduplication, vowel harmony, or stem modification (abla­tive changes) in some languages. Circumfixes and clitics are additional devices that function as alakítók in certain linguistic systems.

Examples illustrate their function across languages. In English, prefixes like un- or re- and suffixes such as -ed, -ing, -s, or derivational endings like -er serve as alakítók by altering meaning or tense, forming plurals, or creating agent nouns. Other languages employ similar mechanisms with their own affixes and morphophonological rules, so the specific realizations of alakítók vary by language.

In scholarly use, the term emphasizes the active role of form-building elements separate from lexical content. Researchers study how alakítók interact with phonology, syntax, and semantics, and how different languages employ varied strategies for word formation.
