An akyn is a traditional Central Asian performing artist, most commonly associated with the Kazakh and Kyrgyz cultures. Akyns are primarily poets and singers who often accompany themselves on the dombra, a long-necked lute. Their performances can be improvisational, featuring epic poems, historical narratives, lyrical songs, and often witty or satirical commentary on society. The term itself derives from Turkic languages, related to words meaning "to sing" or "to compose."

The role of the akyn was historically significant in preserving oral traditions, transmitting cultural knowledge, and serving as a voice for the people. They were esteemed figures, often invited to important gatherings, festivals, and celebrations. The akyn's repertoire could range from deeply personal reflections to grand sagas recounting the deeds of heroes and ancestors. Competition between akyns, known as айтыс (aitys), is a celebrated form of poetic duel where they exchange verses, often extemporaneously, testing each other's wit, skill, and knowledge. This tradition continues to be practiced today, highlighting the enduring cultural importance of the akyn.
