Akinetopsi is a rare neurological disorder characterized by the inability to perceive motion. Individuals with akinetopsi can see objects and their forms, but they appear to be stationary even when they are moving. This can manifest in various ways, such as seeing a car pass by as if it were instantly appearing at a new location, or experiencing jerky, discontinuous movements of people and objects.

The condition typically arises from damage to a specific area of the brain known as the V5 or MT (middle temporal) area, which is responsible for processing visual motion. This damage can be caused by a stroke, head injury, or certain neurological diseases. In some cases, akinetopsi can also occur spontaneously without a clear identifiable cause.

The experience of akinetopsi can significantly impact a person's daily life. Simple tasks like crossing the street, pouring a drink, or even watching a film can become challenging and disorienting. Social interactions can also be affected, as it may be difficult to follow conversations or gauge a person's emotional state if their facial expressions are not perceived as moving.
