Ajoneuvojäähdytys refers to the cooling systems used in vehicles to prevent engine overheating. The primary function of an automotive cooling system is to dissipate the heat generated by the engine's combustion process, ensuring it operates within its optimal temperature range. This is crucial for engine longevity, fuel efficiency, and performance.

The most common type of cooling system is the liquid-cooled system. This system utilizes a mixture of water and antifreeze (typically ethylene glycol or propylene glycol) circulated through passages in the engine block and cylinder head. A water pump drives this coolant mixture. As the coolant absorbs heat from the engine, it flows to the radiator, a heat exchanger typically located at the front of the vehicle. Air passes through the radiator fins, either from the vehicle's motion or a fan, to cool the coolant. The cooled coolant then returns to the engine to repeat the cycle.

Key components of a liquid-cooled system include the radiator, thermostat, water pump, radiator hoses, and cooling fan. The thermostat regulates coolant flow, opening to allow coolant to circulate to the radiator once the engine reaches its operating temperature and closing to help the engine warm up faster. The cooling fan, often electrically operated or driven by the engine, assists in airflow through the radiator, especially at low speeds or when the vehicle is stationary.
