Aivovaltimon refers to the carotid artery in Finnish. The carotid arteries are major blood vessels in the neck that supply oxygenated blood to the brain, face, and neck. There are two carotid arteries, a left and a right, each originating from the aorta in the chest. These arteries then ascend along the sides of the neck.

Each common carotid artery bifurcates into two branches, the internal carotid artery and the external carotid artery. The internal carotid artery is primarily responsible for supplying blood to the brain, while the external carotid artery supplies blood to the face, scalp, and neck structures. A full stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is severely interrupted.
