Ailerons are control surfaces found on the trailing edge of the wings of a fixed-wing aircraft. They are typically placed in pairs, one on each wing, and are hinged to move in opposite directions. The primary function of ailerons is to control the roll of the aircraft, which is rotation around its longitudinal axis.

When the pilot moves the control stick or yoke left or right, one aileron moves up while the other moves down. If the pilot moves the stick left, the left aileron moves down, and the right aileron moves up. The downward-deflecting aileron increases the lift on its wing, while the upward-deflecting aileron decreases the lift on the opposite wing. This differential lift causes the aircraft to roll towards the side with the upward-deflecting aileron. For example, with the stick moved left, the right wing goes up, and the aircraft rolls to the left. Conversely, moving the stick right causes the aircraft to roll to the right.

Ailerons are crucial for maneuvering an aircraft, allowing pilots to bank for turns, correct for turbulence, and maintain stability. The effectiveness of ailerons is influenced by factors such as airspeed, wing design, and the amount of control input. At very low speeds, ailerons may become less effective, requiring larger deflections. They are a fundamental component of aileron control systems in most aircraft.
