Aikakoodaus, known in English as timecoding, is a method used in media production and broadcasting to assign a unique numerical identifier to each frame of a video or audio recording. This identifier typically follows a specific format, such as hours, minutes, seconds, and frames (e.g., 01:05:32:15). The primary purpose of timecoding is to facilitate precise editing, logging, and retrieval of specific moments within a media file.

Historically, timecoding was developed to overcome the limitations of manual logging and editing of analog media like film and videotape. By assigning a numerical address to every frame, editors and producers could easily locate and reference specific points in a sequence. This was crucial for tasks such as creating edit decision lists (EDLs), which detail the exact start and end points of each clip to be used in a final edit.

In digital workflows, timecoding remains an essential concept. While digital systems can often track frame numbers inherently, timecode provides a standardized and universally understood system. It is embedded within the media file itself and is visible in editing software, allowing for seamless collaboration between different users and systems.
