Afstæðiskenningin, or the theory of relativity, is a foundational theory in modern physics developed by Albert Einstein. It encompasses two main theories: special relativity, published in 1905, and general relativity, published in 1915.

Special relativity deals with the relationship between space and time and is based on two postulates: the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers, and the speed of light in a vacuum is the same for all observers, regardless of their motion or the motion of the light source. This theory led to revolutionary concepts such as time dilation, length contraction, and the equivalence of mass and energy, famously expressed in the equation E=mc².

General relativity extended special relativity to include gravity. It describes gravity not as a force, but as a curvature of spacetime caused by mass and energy. Massive objects warp the fabric of spacetime around them, and this curvature dictates how other objects move. This theory accurately predicts phenomena like the bending of light by gravity, the orbit of Mercury, and the existence of gravitational waves.

The theory of relativity has had a profound impact on our understanding of the universe, from the behavior of subatomic particles to the evolution of galaxies and the cosmos as a whole. It is a cornerstone of modern physics and has numerous practical applications, including the functioning of GPS systems.
