Afstandmeting is the process of determining the spatial separation between two or more points. This fundamental concept has numerous applications across various fields, including surveying, navigation, engineering, astronomy, and everyday life. The unit of distance measured depends on the context, with common units including meters, kilometers, feet, miles, and light-years.

Historically, simple methods like pacing or using marked ropes were employed for short distances. For longer distances, techniques like triangulation, which involves measuring angles and known lengths to calculate unknown distances, became essential. The development of tools such as the odograph and later the odometer automated distance recording in vehicles.

With advancements in technology, more sophisticated methods have emerged. Electronic distance measurement (EDM) instruments use electromagnetic waves or lasers to accurately measure distances over much larger ranges than traditional optical methods. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), like GPS, provide precise positional data that can be used to calculate distances between points on Earth. Other techniques include sonar for underwater distance measurement and radar for detecting objects and their distances, often used in aviation and meteorology.
