Afsetzung is a term used in several Germanic languages to describe the act of removing a person from a position of authority, or more generally the act of setting something aside. In political and legal contexts, it can refer to deposition, dismissal, or ouster of officials, rulers, or church leaders.

In German, the standard contemporary spelling is Absetzung. Afsetzung is not common in modern German and is typically regarded as nonstandard, dialectal, or a historical form. In these contexts, Absetzung conveys the sense of formal removal from office or authority.

In Dutch and Afrikaans, however, the related forms afzetting (Dutch) and afsetting (Afrikaans) are standard and widely used. They can denote the removal or deposition of a person from public office, as well as the broader idea of deposition in a legal or political sense. Additionally, in Dutch and Afrikaans, afzetting/afsetting is also used in geological and sedimentological contexts to mean deposition of materials, such as sediments accumulating over time.

Etymology across languages stems from the prefix meaning away or off (af-, ab-) combined with forms of zetten or setting/placing, yielding a core sense of “putting away” or “placing aside.” The exact sense—political removal, formal deposition, or geological deposition—depends on the language and the specific domain.
