Aerophonic is a term used to describe musical instruments that produce sound by causing a column of air to vibrate. These instruments are broadly categorized as wind instruments. The fundamental principle behind aerophonic instruments is the manipulation of airflow to create specific pitches and timbres. This manipulation is typically achieved through a mouthpiece, reeds, or the player's lips, which set the air column in motion.

The length and width of the vibrating air column are key factors in determining the pitch produced. Shorter or narrower columns generally produce higher pitches, while longer or wider columns produce lower pitches. Aerophonic instruments can be further classified based on how the air column is initiated and controlled.
