aerenchyme
Aerenchyma is a specialized plant tissue characterized by large intercellular air spaces. This tissue is found in the stems and roots of many aquatic and semi-aquatic plants, as well as in some terrestrial plants that grow in waterlogged or anaerobic soils. The primary function of aerenchyma is to facilitate gas exchange between the aerial parts of the plant and the submerged organs. The air spaces within the aerenchyma allow for the diffusion of oxygen from the atmosphere down to the roots, which are deprived of oxygen in waterlogged environments. Conversely, it can also allow for the diffusion of carbon dioxide from the roots, which can be used in photosynthesis.
The formation of aerenchyma can occur through several mechanisms, including lysigenous aerenchyma, where cells undergo programmed
