An aerophone is a musical instrument that produces sound by a vibrating column of air. This is achieved by striking, rubbing, or blowing into the instrument. Aerophones are one of the four main families of musical instruments, as classified by the Hornbostel-Sachs system.

The sound is generated through a vibrating medium, which is typically air. This vibration can be initiated in several ways. Some aerophones, like whistles and flutes, produce sound by directing a stream of air against an edge or into a duct. Other aerophones, such as trumpets and clarinets, rely on the player's lips or a reed vibrating against a mouthpiece. In free aerophones, such as the whip or the siren, the vibrating air is not contained within the instrument itself.

Aerophones encompass a vast range of instruments found in cultures worldwide. Examples include the human voice, which is a natural aerophone, as well as widely known instruments like the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, organ, and accordion. The specific timbre and pitch of an aerophone are determined by factors such as the length and shape of the air column, the method of initiating the vibration, and the presence of any resonators or additional mechanisms to modify the sound.
