Aegyptus is the Latin name for the region commonly known in antiquity as Egypt. The term appears in classical and medieval Latin sources and is used in modern scholarship to designate both the ancient land of the Nile valley and, in the Roman period, the Roman province of Egypt. The word Aegyptus derives from Greek Aigyptos, which in turn comes from the ancient Egyptian name for Memphis, Hikuptah, and is the etymological source of the English word Egypt.

Geography and settlements are centered on the Nile valley and its delta, where water and silt supported dense agricultural communities. Ancient Egyptian cities such as Memphis and Thebes rose along the river, while Alexandria became a major center after its founding by Alexander the Great. The population lived primarily along the riverine corridor, with hinterlands made arid desert.

History: Egypt was unified around 3100 BCE and developed a long, influential civilization known for monumental architecture, hieroglyphic writing, and complex religious practices. After the conquests of Alexander the Great, it became the Ptolemaic Kingdom, a Greek‑Macedonian state that preserved Egyptian traditions while integrating Hellenistic culture. In 30 BCE, following the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra, Egypt became the Roman province of Aegyptus, governed by a praefect and renowned for grain production. The later Roman and Byzantine periods witnessed Christianization and continued cultural exchange. In the 7th century CE, Arab Muslim conquest reshaped administration and language, and the region subsequently formed part of successive Islamic empires.

Language and culture: Ancient Egypt used hieroglyphic, Demotic, and later Coptic writings; Greek became common in administration under the Ptolemies and Romans. The Latin name Aegyptus endures in scholarly and historical contexts, while modern Egypt corresponds to the geographic core of ancient Aegyptus.
