Adjectives are commonly categorized as qualitative or quantitative, and as gradable or non-gradable. Qualitative adjectives describe inherent properties (e.g., “bright,” “tough”), while quantitative ones convey amount (e.g., “three,” “several”). Gradable adjectives admit varying degrees (e.g., “big,” “bigger,” “biggest”) and can interact with degree modifiers such as very or somewhat.

Morphologically, adjectives form comparatives and superlatives (e.g., tall, taller, tallest) and often exhibit irregular forms (good, better, best). Syntactic constraints include compatibility with noun class and placement with other modifiers.

Stylistically, adjectives shape tone and imagery; excessive or biased description can distract or signal subjective judgments.
