In Estonian, the adessive (adessiiv) commonly appears with the suffix -l, producing forms such as lau-al or laual, depending on phonological context. A typical example is Raamat on laual, meaning “The book is on the table.” Estonian uses the adessive for both literal location and stigmatic expressions related to existence or possession.

Across Finnic languages, the adessive contrasts with related locatives such as the inessive (in), illative (into), and allative (onto).
