Adenoidokinesia is a term that describes the phenomenon of abnormal adenoid tissue growth and its potential impact on surrounding structures. The adenoids are a mass of lymphoid tissue located in the nasopharynx, the upper part of the throat behind the nose. While normally present, they can enlarge, a condition known as adenoid hypertrophy. This enlargement can lead to several issues, primarily related to obstruction of the airway and eustachian tube openings.

The consequences of adenoidokinesia often manifest as breathing difficulties, particularly during sleep, which can result in snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. The obstruction of the eustachian tubes can contribute to recurrent ear infections and fluid buildup in the middle ear, potentially affecting hearing. Other symptoms may include chronic nasal congestion, mouth breathing, and changes in voice quality.

The causes of adenoid hypertrophy are not fully understood but are thought to involve genetic predisposition and repeated exposure to infections, which stimulate adenoid tissue to grow. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, often aided by imaging techniques such as lateral neck X-rays or nasopharyngoscopy.
