Additiviteetti is a mathematical property related to functions and operations, describing how the outcome of combining two inputs can be expressed as the sum of individual contributions. The term originates from the Latin word "additivus," meaning "able to be added." In mathematics and related fields, additivity is a key concept in understanding the behavior of functions, measures, and other algebraic structures.

A function \(f: X \to Y\) is considered additive if, for all elements \(x_1, x_2 \in X\), the following condition holds: \(f(x_1 + x_2) = f(x_1) + f(x_2)\). This property signifies that the function preserves the operation of addition within its domain and codomain. Additivity is fundamental in areas such as linear algebra, measure theory, and economics, where it often reflects the idea that the whole is equal to the sum of its parts.

In measure theory, a measure \(\mu\) is additive if, for any two disjoint sets \(A\) and \(B\), the measure of their union equals the sum of their measures: \(\mu(A \cup B) = \mu(A) + \mu(B)\). This property extends to sigma-additivity when dealing with countable collections of disjoint sets.
