Acyloins, also known as alpha-hydroxy ketones, are a class of organic compounds characterized by a hydroxyl group (-OH) adjacent to a carbonyl group (C=O) on a carbon chain. The general structure can be represented as R-C(=O)-C(OH)-R', where R and R' are alkyl or aryl groups. Acyloins are a specific type of alpha-hydroxy carbonyl compound, distinguished from beta-hydroxy carbonyls where the hydroxyl and carbonyl groups are separated by a single carbon atom.

The synthesis of acyloins often involves the reductive coupling of esters, a reaction known as the acyloin condensation. This reaction typically uses alkali metals, such as sodium, in an aprotic solvent like toluene. Another common method is the oxidation of vicinal diols. Acyloins are important intermediates in organic synthesis. They can be readily oxidized to alpha-diketones or reduced to 1,2-diols. The hydroxyl group can be protected or derivatized, allowing for selective transformations elsewhere in the molecule. Acyloins find applications in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and polymers. Certain acyloins are also used as photoinitiators in polymerization processes, where they absorb UV light and generate radicals to initiate chain growth.
