Acronyms, in Romanian usage, are called acronime, with the singular acronim. In general, acronyms are abbreviations formed from the initial letters of the words in a phrase and pronounced as a single word. They are used to simplify long terms, especially in fields such as science, government, technology, and everyday language.

Formation and pronunciation: Most acronyms are created by taking the first letters of the components of a compound phrase. Some include vowels or syllables to ease pronunciation. If the result is spoken as a word (for example, NATO, radar, laser), it is commonly described as an acronym. If it is spoken letter by letter (for example, FBI), it may be called an initialism. Usage varies by language and discipline; some terms are widely treated as acronyms in daily speech even if some speakers still pronounce them letter by letter.

Origins and examples: The term acronym comes from Greek roots meaning “top name.” The concept gained prominence in the 20th century, notably in military, scientific, and organizational contexts. Notable acronyms include NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), and laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation). Radar (Radio Detection and Ranging) is another widely used example that is commonly spoken as a word.
