Acromegaly is a rare hormonal disorder that develops when the pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone. In children, this excess growth hormone causes gigantism. In adults, it leads to acromegaly.

The pituitary gland is a small gland located at the base of the brain that produces hormones to regulate various bodily functions, including growth. In most cases of acromegaly, a noncancerous tumor of the pituitary gland called a pituitary adenoma causes the overproduction of growth hormone.

Diagnosis of acromegaly typically involves blood tests to measure growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels, as well as imaging tests like MRI to detect pituitary tumors.

Treatment aims to reduce growth hormone production, manage symptoms, and address any complications. Options include surgery to remove the pituitary tumor, medication to lower growth hormone levels, and radiation therapy. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing the condition and preventing long-term health problems.
