Abuzimet, the Albanian term for abuses, refers to acts or patterns of harm, coercion, or exploitation directed at individuals or groups. The concept covers a range of behaviors that diminish a person’s autonomy, safety, or dignity and can occur in private relationships, family settings, care or institutional environments, workplaces, or online.

Common forms include physical abuse (bodily harm); psychological or emotional abuse (manipulation, intimidation, humiliation); sexual abuse (non-consensual acts); financial abuse (control of money or resources); neglect (failure to provide essential care); and digital or cyber abuse (stalking, harassment online). Coercive control refers to repeated patterns aimed at restricting autonomy and daily life.

Indicators may include fear of a partner or caregiver, isolation from social networks, unexplained injuries, frequent changes in finances, or abrupt withdrawal from activities. Prolonged abuse can cause physical injuries, mental health problems, trauma, economic hardship, and diminished opportunities.

Legal and policy frameworks address abuse through domestic-violence laws, anti-harassment statutes, child and elder protection, workplace safety rules, and data privacy. Enforceable measures may include protective orders, reporting duties, and access to support services.

Prevention and response emphasize education, accessible reporting channels, survivor-centered services, and coordinated public systems. Hotlines, shelters, counseling, and legal aid support affected individuals while addressing root causes such as gender inequality and stigma.
