absoluutista is a Finnish word that translates to "absolutism" in English. It refers to a form of government where a monarch holds supreme and unlimited power. In an absolutist system, the ruler's authority is not subject to any legal or legislative checks. This type of governance was prevalent in many European countries, particularly during the early modern period.

The concept of absolutism often involved the divine right of kings, the belief that the monarch's power was granted by God and therefore unchallengeable. Absolutist rulers typically controlled all aspects of the state, including the military, lawmaking, taxation, and justice system. Their decisions were considered final, and there was no formal mechanism for dissent or opposition.

Notable examples of absolutist rulers include Louis XIV of France, often referred to as the "Sun King," who famously declared "L'état, c'est moi" (I am the state). Peter the Great of Russia also embodied absolutist principles by undertaking sweeping reforms and consolidating his power. While absolutism offered a degree of stability and centralized control, it also led to a lack of political freedom and could result in arbitrary rule. The Enlightenment and subsequent revolutions challenged and ultimately diminished the influence of absolutist regimes in favor of more representative forms of government.
