Ablatiivista is the Finnish term used to refer to the ablative case, a grammatical category used to express movement away from a reference point, origin, or source. The concept originates with Latin in the form ablativus and has since appeared in many language families with varying functions and realizations. In Latin and many of its descendants, the ablative can encode instrument, cause, manner, separation, and agent in addition to indicating origin or starting point, sometimes within compound or idiomatic constructions.
