Aaltosäteet, often translated as "wave rays" or "light rays," refers to the paths that light follows in optics. In geometrical optics, light is treated as propagating in straight lines called rays. These rays are conceptual tools used to describe the behavior of light as it reflects off surfaces or refracts through different media. The direction of a ray is perpendicular to the wavefront of the light.

The concept of aaltosäteet is fundamental to understanding phenomena such as image formation by lenses and mirrors. When light interacts with an optical system, the path of each ray can be predicted using the laws of reflection and refraction. For example, the law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, and both the incident ray, reflected ray, and the normal to the surface lie in the same plane. Similarly, Snell's law governs refraction, describing how the direction of light changes when it passes from one medium to another with a different refractive index.

While geometrical optics effectively uses aaltosäteet for many applications, it's important to note that this is an approximation. In reality, light is an electromagnetic wave and exhibits wave-like properties such as diffraction and interference, which cannot be fully explained by the ray model alone. However, for systems where the dimensions of the objects interacting with light are much larger than the wavelength of the light, the ray model provides a remarkably accurate and practical description of light's behavior. This simplifies the analysis of many optical instruments and systems.
