Aaltolähdön is a Finnish term that translates to “wave source” in English. In physics and engineering, it refers to the origin or region where waves are generated and energy is radiated into a medium. The concept encompasses the location, mechanism, and time variation by which a wave field is produced, as well as the initial conditions that shape the subsequent wave propagation.

A wave source can be described by its temporal behavior (how the source varies in time) and its spatial distribution (how the source activity is arranged in space). The resulting wave field depends on the source characteristics, the properties of the medium, and the boundary conditions.
