Aaltifunktioiden, or wave functions in English, are fundamental concepts in quantum mechanics. They are mathematical descriptions of the quantum state of an isolated quantum system. A wave function, often denoted by the Greek letter psi (ψ), contains all the information that can be known about the system. However, it does not directly represent a physical observable quantity like position or momentum.

Instead, the square of the magnitude of the wave function, |ψ|², is interpreted as the probability density of finding the particle in a particular state or location. This probabilistic interpretation is a cornerstone of quantum theory, contrasting with the deterministic nature of classical physics. The wave function evolves over time according to the Schrödinger equation, which dictates how the quantum state changes.

The wave function can be complex-valued and may depend on position, momentum, spin, and time. Phenomena such as superposition, where a quantum system can exist in multiple states simultaneously, and entanglement, where the states of two or more particles are linked, are described by the properties of their respective wave functions. Solving for the wave function of a given system allows physicists to predict the outcomes of experiments and understand the behavior of matter and energy at the atomic and subatomic levels.
