aDesanderdesilter refers to a package or configuration of hydrocyclone units used in drilling fluid solids control to remove solids from slurry. The term combines two related devices: desanders, which target sand-sized particles, and desilters, which target finer solids. In practice, operators may mount desander and desilter units in parallel or on a shared manifold as part of a mud cleaner system. The design and arrangement vary by manufacturer, but the goal is to reduce solids content and protect downstream equipment.

Operation: Mud is pumped into the hydrocyclones under pressure. The tangential inlet creates a high-speed vortex; centrifugal forces separate particles by size and density. Heavier solids collect at the underflow, lighter liquid exits through the overflow. Desanders typically use larger-diameter hydrocyclones and remove coarser sand, while desilters use smaller-diameter hydrocyclones to target finer solids. Actual cut points depend on cyclone size, feed pressure, temperature, and solids loading.

Construction: Units are often cylindrical-conical hydrocyclones housed in steel or alloy casings, with wear parts such as polyurethane liners or ceramic inserts. They are fed from the drilling mud pump and discharged to underflow receivers or to a mud cleaner, with the overflow returned to the mud system. Banks may include multiple desanders and desilters in a single skid for higher capacity.

Applications: Desanders and desilters are standard components in oil and gas drilling mud systems, mining and mineral processing, and water-treatment facilities where removal of solids improves fluid performance and protects pumps, cutters, and separators.
