In common usage, it refers to the peak instantaneous power the system could produce when exposed to the maximum solar irradiance available at the location, subject to equipment constraints. Some sources also use the term to denote an upper bound on daily energy generation under clear-sky conditions, providing a benchmark for site potential and system sizing.

Calculation and factors: The zonnemaximum can be approximated by Pmax = η × A × G, where η is the overall conversion efficiency, A is the active panel area, and G is solar irradiance. Under standard test conditions, G is 1000 watts per square meter. Real installations experience losses from temperature, wiring, soiling, inverters, and electrical mismatch, so the zonnemaximum represents an upper bound rather than a guaranteed output.

Applications: Zonnemaximum is used in site assessment, performance benchmarking, and financial modeling to estimate upper limits of yield, compare technologies, or assess design margins.
