Zollstöcke
A Zollstock, also known as a folding rule or zigzag rule, is a measuring tool used to determine length. It typically consists of several hinged sections, usually made of wood or plastic, that fold together for compact storage. These sections are marked with incremental measurements, commonly in centimeters and millimeters on one side, and inches and fractions of an inch on the other. The hinged joints allow the rule to be extended to its full length or folded into a more manageable size. When extended, the sections lock into place, forming a rigid straight edge. The name "Zollstock" itself derives from "Zoll," the German word for inch, reflecting its historical origins and common usage. Zollstöcke are widely used in carpentry, construction, DIY projects, and by tradespeople for general measuring tasks. Their portability and ease of use make them a convenient alternative to tape measures in certain situations, especially for shorter, more precise measurements or when a rigid straight edge is beneficial.
