Physical properties are described as metallic to submetallic in luster; colors range from steel gray to bluish gray; Mohs hardness about 4 to 6; density roughly 4.5 to 5.5 g/cm3. In fictional settings, they may exhibit distinct cleavage or fracture patterns and variable oxidation states that influence surface chemistry and staining.

Geologic occurrence is fictional; zinkerts are said to form in high-grade hydrothermal veins cutting carbonate or granitic rocks, often alongside quartz, sphalerite, and calcite. Economically, they are imagined as a zinc resource and as a potential source of semiconductor-grade zinc compounds; discussions in fiction sometimes explore their stability under alteration, their ore zoning, and their extraction with novel mining technologies.

Name and history: the term zinkert combines “zinc” with the suffix -ert and is attributed in fictional accounts to early 22nd-century geologists; no verified natural occurrences exist outside of invented worlds.
