Zillergrund

Zillergrund is a valley located in the Zillertal Alps in Tyrol, Austria. It is one of the side valleys of the Zillertal, branching off from the main valley near Mayrhofen. The Zillergrund is characterized by its dramatic alpine scenery, featuring steep mountain slopes, dense forests, and high peaks. The Ziller River, a tributary of the Inn River, flows through the valley, fed by numerous mountain streams and glaciers.

The valley is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, particularly hiking and mountaineering. Several marked trails wind through the Zillergrund, offering routes for various skill levels. The higher reaches of the valley are home to alpine huts that provide accommodation for hikers. Climbers are drawn to the challenging rock faces and glaciers. In winter, the area transforms into a snow-covered landscape, attracting cross-country skiers and winter hikers, although it is not a major downhill skiing resort.

The Zillergrund is also significant for its hydroelectric power generation. The Zillergründl dam, completed in the 1980s, creates a reservoir that is used to produce electricity. The presence of the dam has altered the natural flow of the Ziller River in this section of the valley. The natural beauty and recreational opportunities make Zillergrund a notable part of the Tyrolean alpine region.
