Zhou is a Chinese surname as well as the name of an ancient Chinese dynasty. The surname uses the character 周 and is romanized as Zhou in pinyin; it may appear as Chou in older western texts. The same character also designates the Zhou dynasty, whose rulers traced their lineage to the Zhou people and established a long-lasting political order in ancient China.
