Zaoyciel

Zaoyciel is a fictional city in the northern duchy of Verdaran in the fantasy world of Loranth. It lies along the Verd River, functioning as a regional hub for trade between inland settlements and coastal ports. The toponym Zaoyciel has uncertain origins; scholars propose a compound of an older Zaoi term meaning "watch" with a later regional element meaning "sky" or "hearth," though other etymologies exist.

Zaoyciel occupies a broad alluvial plain and is crossed by a network of canals that connect quays with market squares. The climate is temperate, with hot summers and cool, wet winters, favorable to the city’s orchard and workshop economies.

Founded by river traders in the early medieval era, Zaoyciel grew around a strategic crossing and a defensive citadel, later expanding into crafts and trade. It prospered during the medieval period as a center for glassmaking and textiles. A fire in the 14th century led to early stone architecture, and the city later received a charter granting autonomies under the Verdaran duchy.

Today, the city is governed by a municipal council led by a burgomaster, with representation from merchant, artisan, and agricultural guilds. Its economy relies on crafts such as glass, ceramics, and textiles, as well as river trade and services for travelers.

Cultural notes: Zaoyciel is known for the Sky Lantern Festival and a tradition of decorative arcades and canal-front markets. The Zaoycian dialect of Verdaran is spoken alongside the regional language, and the city hosts museums and craft schools.
