Zamenhofs
Zamenhof is a surname of Polish-Jewish origin. It is most famously associated with Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof, the creator of Esperanto, the most widely spoken constructed international language. Ludwik Zamenhof was born in Białystok, a city then part of the Russian Empire and now in Poland, in 1859. He was a physician and ophthalmologist by profession. His linguistic interest was driven by the desire to foster understanding and peace among people of different nationalities, a goal he believed could be achieved through a common, neutral language.
