Zündkerze

Zündkerze is the German word for spark plug. A spark plug is a device that ignites the air-fuel mixture in an internal combustion engine by creating an electric spark. It consists of a central electrode surrounded by an insulator, typically made of ceramic, and a ground electrode that is part of the plug's metal shell. The spark plug is screwed into the cylinder head of the engine.

The spark plug's function is crucial for the engine's operation. When the ignition system generates a high-voltage pulse, this pulse travels to the spark plug. The high voltage causes an electric arc to jump across the gap between the central electrode and the ground electrode. This arc ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, initiating the power stroke of the engine cycle.

The performance and lifespan of a spark plug depend on several factors, including the engine's operating conditions, the quality of the spark plug itself, and the type of fuel used. Over time, the electrodes can erode, and the insulator can become fouled with deposits, leading to misfires and reduced engine efficiency. Therefore, spark plugs are considered a maintenance item and are typically replaced at regular intervals as part of routine engine servicing. Different types of spark plugs exist, employing various materials for the electrodes (such as copper, platinum, or iridium) to enhance durability and performance.
