Yritysnumero

Yritysnumero, commonly referred to as the Finnish Y-tunnus (Y-tunnus, business ID), is a unique identifier assigned to companies and other entities that conduct business in Finland. It is used to identify the entity in official records, taxation, invoicing, and interactions with public authorities and financial institutions. The term is often used interchangeably with Y-tunnus in everyday Finnish, and appears in public registers and the Yritys- ja yhteisötunnukset (YTJ) database.

The standard format is seven digits, a hyphen and a check digit (for example 1234567-8). The number is issued when the business is registered in the Finnish Trade Register maintained by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) with the taxpayer authorities. It covers most business structures, including limited companies, corporations, associations, and sole proprietorships; it does not apply to private individuals not engaged in business.

Public authorities and other entities validate the Y-tunnus in numerous services; the Yritys- ja yhteisötunnukset service (YTJ) provides information about registered entities. For VAT purposes within the EU, the Y-tunnus is used in the VAT number by prefixing with FI (e.g., FI1234567-8). If a business terminates, the Y-tunnus may be retired from official use, but the historical record remains accessible in the trade register.
