Yliäänipamaukset

Yliäänipamaukset, or sonic booms in English, are the sounds generated by objects traveling through the air faster than the speed of sound. This phenomenon occurs when an object, such as an aircraft or a projectile, exceeds the speed of sound, which is approximately 343 meters per second at sea level and 20 degrees Celsius.

As the object moves through the air at supersonic speeds, it creates a disturbance in the air pressure. This disturbance propagates outwards as shock waves. These shock waves are cone-shaped and converge at a specific angle behind the object. When these shock waves reach an observer on the ground, they are perceived as a loud "boom" or "bang," which is the sonic boom.

The intensity of a sonic boom depends on several factors, including the size and shape of the object, its altitude, and the atmospheric conditions. Larger and more aerodynamic objects tend to produce stronger sonic booms. At higher altitudes, the shock waves spread out and weaken before reaching the ground, resulting in a less intense boom.

Sonic booms can cause various effects, including startling people, rattling windows, and, in extreme cases, even minor structural damage. For this reason, supersonic flight over populated areas is often restricted in many countries. Aircraft designed for supersonic flight, such as fighter jets and some commercial aircraft prototypes, are engineered to minimize the intensity of their sonic booms.
