Yliääninopeuksille, commonly referred to as supersonic speeds, describes a speed that exceeds the speed of sound. The speed of sound is not constant but varies with the medium through which it travels, primarily depending on temperature and the medium's properties. In dry air at 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) at sea level, the speed of sound is approximately 343 meters per second, or 1,235 kilometers per hour (767 miles per hour).

Objects or phenomena moving at or above the speed of sound experience significant aerodynamic effects. A key characteristic of supersonic flight is the formation of a shock wave, which is a discontinuity in pressure, temperature, and density. This shock wave propagates outwards from the object and is responsible for the sonic boom, an audible sound produced when the shock wave reaches an observer.

Achieving supersonic speeds requires significant power. Aircraft designed for supersonic flight, such as fighter jets and some commercial airliners like the retired Concorde, are equipped with powerful engines and specialized aerodynamic designs to manage the intense forces and heat generated at these velocities. The challenges in designing for supersonic flight include controlling airflow, reducing drag, and ensuring structural integrity under extreme conditions.
