Yliääninopeuksilla, also known as supersonic speeds, refers to speeds that exceed the speed of sound in a given medium. The speed of sound is not constant and varies depending on the temperature, pressure, and composition of the medium. In dry air at 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) at sea level, the speed of sound is approximately 343 meters per second, or 1,235 kilometers per hour (767 miles per hour).

Objects traveling at supersonic speeds create a shock wave, which is a region of very rapid pressure and density change. This shock wave is responsible for the characteristic "sonic boom" that is heard when an aircraft or other object breaks the sound barrier. The sonic boom is not a single event but rather a continuous phenomenon that follows the supersonic object.

Supersonic flight was first achieved by Chuck Yeager in the Bell X-1 aircraft in 1947. Since then, supersonic technology has been developed for military aircraft, such as fighter jets and reconnaissance planes, and for some commercial aircraft, like the Concorde. However, supersonic commercial travel is limited due to factors such as fuel efficiency, noise pollution from sonic booms, and the high cost of development and operation. Research continues into developing more efficient and quieter supersonic aircraft.
