Yliäänilentoja, or supersonic flight, refers to travel through the air at speeds exceeding the speed of sound. The speed of sound varies depending on factors such as air temperature and altitude, but it is approximately 343 meters per second (767 miles per hour) at sea level and 15 degrees Celsius. Aircraft capable of supersonic flight are known as supersonic aircraft.

The primary characteristic of supersonic flight is the formation of shock waves. As an aircraft approaches and surpasses the speed of sound, it creates pressure waves that cannot propagate away from the aircraft fast enough. These waves coalesce into shock waves, which are regions of abrupt change in pressure, temperature, and density. The most noticeable effect of these shock waves reaching the ground is a sonic boom, a loud noise resembling an explosion, caused by the rapid change in air pressure.

Supersonic flight requires specialized aircraft designs to manage the increased drag, heat, and aerodynamic stresses associated with such high speeds. This typically involves swept wings, pointed noses, and powerful engines. Historically, supersonic flight has been utilized by military aircraft for reconnaissance and combat, as well as by some commercial airliners, such as the Concorde, which operated from 1976 to 2003.

The challenges of supersonic flight include increased fuel consumption, higher noise pollution due to sonic booms, and the potential for thermal issues. While supersonic commercial travel has largely ceased due to economic and environmental concerns, research and development continue into new generations of supersonic and hypersonic (speeds five times the speed of sound or greater) aircraft for both military and potential future civilian applications.
