Ylähengitystie refers to the upper respiratory tract in Finnish. This anatomical region includes the nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, and larynx. These structures are crucial for breathing, speaking, and protecting the lower respiratory system from foreign particles and pathogens.

The nose and nasal cavity are the primary entry points for air into the respiratory system. Here, inhaled air is warmed, humidified, and filtered by hairs and mucus. The pharynx, commonly known as the throat, serves as a passageway for both air and food, connecting the nasal cavity and mouth to the larynx and esophagus. The larynx, or voice box, is situated below the pharynx and contains the vocal cords, which are essential for producing sound. It also acts as a protective mechanism, preventing food and liquid from entering the trachea during swallowing.

Infections and conditions affecting the upper respiratory tract are common. These include the common cold, sinusitis, pharyngitis, and laryngitis. Symptoms can range from a runny nose, sore throat, and cough to more severe issues like difficulty breathing. Maintaining good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, is important in preventing the spread of upper respiratory infections. Environmental factors like air pollution and allergens can also irritate the upper airways and contribute to respiratory problems.
