Yksikköquaternionilla refers to a unit quaternion in mathematics. A quaternion is a number that can be expressed in the form a + bi + cj + dk, where a, b, c, and d are real numbers, and i, j, and k are imaginary units. These imaginary units have the property that i² = j² = k² = ijk = -1. Unit quaternions are a specific type of quaternion where the magnitude, or norm, of the quaternion is equal to 1. The norm of a quaternion a + bi + cj + dk is defined as the square root of (a² + b² + c² + d²). Therefore, for a unit quaternion, a² + b² + c² + d² = 1.

Unit quaternions are particularly important in three-dimensional geometry and computer graphics for representing rotations. Unlike Euler angles, which can suffer from gimbal lock, unit quaternions provide a robust and efficient way to perform rotations without ambiguity. A unit quaternion can represent a rotation by an angle θ around an axis defined by a unit vector (x, y, z) through the formula cos(θ/2) + (xi + yj + zk)sin(θ/2). The multiplication of two unit quaternions corresponds to the composition of the rotations they represent. This property makes them a powerful tool for manipulating orientations in 3D space.
